Religion Debates - sign of a poor argument

By God-Musings.com | July 20, 2008

In various religion debates and religion discussions which take place between people, it is oh-so-common for many to begin quoting their own religious texts, or the words of their own religious leaders, in a bid to “win” the argument or to make a point.

In all honesty, and with all due respect, I think it is a sign of a very poor argument when one is only able to quote internal sources of information as supporting evidence. This, in my mind, applies to all kinds of debates and discussions, and not just religious ones.

What do I mean?

Imagine Peter (just a random name) is trying to make a point that Company-ABC is the best in the business. He has a wonderful and stirring argument. But all he can quote and cite is the CEO of Company-ABC, the ex-CEO of Company-ABC, the policy handbook of Company-ABC, the operations manual of Company-ABC, and what the founder of Company-ABC wrote in his autobiography.

Erm, not a very convincing argument, is it?

This, in my view, is why many religion debates and religion discussions hit a dead end, and are not very fruitful at all.

That’s one main reason why I shy away from such discussions.

After all, what’s stopping Roger (another random name) from Rogerville (a figment of my imagination) from today writing a 1000-page book, claiming to be divinely inspired, in which he claims he was told by God that all other faiths and texts before him are all hogwash and should be duely ignored?

I can assurely you, I am quite certain, in a few decades or centuries’ time, he will have a pretty healthy following of believers. A new religion is born!

It is clear that it is impossible to objectively and factually argue the case for which religion is right, so-called. Thus, when it comes to religion debates and religion discussions, we all need to be a little more open-minded.

Bear in mind, that however strongly convicted you are toward your own beliefs, there are millions of people out there who are just as strongly convicted toward their own.

And we are all equal in the eyes of the Creator.
